Helping part of a FTSE 100 company engage with rural communities

SSEN Transmission (part of SSE plc) is responsible for the electricity transmission network in northern Scotland. The network extends over a quarter of the UK’s land mass, crossing some of its most challenging terrain. We have worked with SSEN Transmission for several years across multiple departments, including supporting their community engagement, educational programmes, vulnerable customer interaction and corporate reporting.

Customer and Community Engagement

SSEN Transmission’s network consists of underground and subsea cables, overhead lines on wooden poles or steel towers, and electricity substations and the network is consistently expanding and improving. We work with the team across the year on stakeholder engagement events via community consultation to help create a positive impact in relatively isolated rural communities in Scotland.

The public engagement events are organised to promote infrastructure investment works they propose to carry out. Traditional promotional methods have not always helped to adequately explain and promote the value of the infrastructure improvements needed which has prolonged the period of public consultation and on occasion created ‘hostility’ within affected communities creating a detrimental impact on the brand.

“UMA have been brilliant in designing our public consultation materials, delivering high-quality work with great attention to detail, even within incredibly tight time frames. Their customer service is consistently friendly and approachable, making the entire process seamless and stress-free”.

Priority Services Register Communications

UMA also works closely alongside the Vulnerability and Welfare team who play a pivotal role in supporting SSEN Transmission’s community. SSEN Transmission recognises the pivotal role that organisations and charities play in achieving better outcomes for communities and widening the safety net of care around them. We worked with the team to create a Community Toolkit to help promote the Priority Services Register to service users or residents who may need extra support during power cuts and explain the extra advice and support available for when there is a power cut.

School & Education Campaign

As part of SSEN Transmission’s ongoing commitment to powering their communities, we worked with them to create a campaign that contained information and assets to provide to primary schools as an educational resource. The campaign supports SSEN in helping young people understand how electricity works and most importantly, how to stay safe around it.

We developed a series of animated characters – “The Power Pack Pals” who are four great friends who spark the imagination of children and help them to understand why electricity, the ‘Magic Power’, is very important in our world but also very dangerous, and should be treated with extra special care. The campaign also included access to a game section on the microsite for The Power Pack Pals where children can play a series of interactive games, including spotting hazards, memory matches and a quiz on electricity.

“A huge thank you for the Education Campaign – I think it is excellent; the campaign is very strong, the visuals, briefings and collateral are great – very well thought through and delivered exactly what we had hoped. We’ve already had good feedback internally and I’m excited about rolling out to our business next year.”
